Masturbation is as normal as smiling

You may already know what the topic of this column is going to be based on the intriguing headline my editors wrote in order to suck you into this, but I’m going to mention the word anyway: Masturbation.
How do you feel? Are you aghast or unphased? Are you teeming with disgust or trying your best to retain your giggles?
Have you ever considered why such a word, and what the word defines, creates such a strong emotion?
For those who match the “aghast and disgusted” description, I advise you to open your minds, and for the giggly readers who are expecting this column to be another satirical twist, I advise you to grow up.
I’m not going to paint the practice of masturbation as a joke,  because it’s not.
Masturbation is absolutely normal.
Masturbation is not a sport. Masturbation is not a sin. Masturbation is nothing more than a bodily function.
There are certain bodily functions that some animals are required to perform, such as eating, sleeping and urinating.
These are things that must be done in order for an individual to continue existing.
On the other hand, there are other bodily functions that are a bit more mentally involved, but functions, nonetheless.
These include smiling, showering, speaking, shaving, etc. If you consider body functions in this way you’ll end up with quite a long list of voluntary functions, and your list would be grossly incomplete if you didn’t include sexual intercourse and masturbation.
So if you met a woman who showered and shaved on a regular basis, who spoke eloquently and who always greeted you with a smile, would you see her in a negative light? Would you belittle her, simply because she chooses to do these things?
What if you met an unkempt man who smelled as if he hadn’t showered even once in his entire life?
Imagine meeting someone whose teeth are so decrepit and un-brushed that you’d hope he didn’t smile.
It’s likely that your emotions and your assumptions have changed entirely, based simply on the fact that this person does not perform those voluntary functions.
But imagine meeting both the woman and man and learning that they masturbate on a regular basis. How would your perception of them change?
It seems to me that masturbation, no matter who is performing such an act, is perceived by society as something negative and perverted. It’s not.
It’s merely something to be done. That said, it is not necessarily a great subject for conversation. I only wish the practice could be seen as being as normal as it is.
