First-Graders Celebrate Lesbian Wedding

Creative Arts Charter School in San Francisco bused 18 first-graders to City Hall last week so they could scatter rose petals at their lesbian teacher’s wedding — the idea was originally proposed by a parent. Some of the students wore political buttons saying, “No on 8″ — regarding Proposition 8 ballot measure that seeks to define marriage in California as a union between one man and one woman. The field trip happened just days after “No on 8″ launched ads claiming same-sex “marriage” would not be taught in schools, no matter what the outcome on November 4.

Liz Jaroflow, the school’s interim director, defended the field trip saying it was academically justifiable and that it was an issue she would be willing to put her job on the line for. “It really is what we call a teachable moment,” she said. “I think I’m well within the parameters.” When asked what educational value the trip had, Jaroflow pointed to the “historical significance of the same-sex marriage” and to “civil rights” saying it is not controversial.

Two children, whose families did not give permission for the trip, remained at the school with another first-grade class.

“It’s just utterly unreasonable that a public school field trip would be to a same-sex wedding,” said Chip White, press secretary for the “Yes on 8″ campaign. “This is overt indoctrination of children who are too young to have an understanding of its purpose.” [worldnetdaily.com, frc.org]
